The first stage of farming in Spiti. Melting 4ft of hard snow on the fields. Sometimes its more than that. The people sprinkle ash and soil on the fields that absorbs more heat during the day time and melting the snow. The temperature in April goes down to -14C.
Here, one Spiti family rests and warms their hand by drinking hot tea on their fields, where they grow green peas and barley. The top layer is frozen in the sub zero temperature in the morning, making it easy to walk and work.
