In the month of January, after four spells of snowfall, when few more public water sources have started freezing, washing clothes got a little tricky for the people of Spiti.
In Kaza village, the steam that flows between old and new Kaza is completely frozen, making it a natural skating area for children. In one corner of this frozen stream, there is a hole dug through the thick sheet of ice and thats where the people wash their clothes.
The sub zero temperature is no hurdle for them. People use rubber gloves and rubber boots and climb straight into the hole and use the flowing water beneath it to wash clothes on regular intervals.
